On Tuesday, June 15, from 4-5pm, MoAD will feature activist and abolitionist Patrisse Cullors on our monthly program BLATANT: A Forum on Art, Rage and Joy. BLATANT is a forum and live zine series authored and facilitated by Independent curator and cultural strategist Ashara Ekundayo that centers the lived experiences and radical imagination of Black womxn artists and cultural workers creating across discipline and geography. Presented in conjunction with her “Artist As First Responder” platform, this monthly discussion highlights artists whose creative practices heal communities and save lives. On Saturday, June 19, from 11am-12:30pm, as part of our Juneteenth Celebration, MoAD will present a Roundtable | Rock 'n' Roll Heretics: Shredding While Black and Female. This multigenerational dialogue will highlight the intersectional journeys of Black women guitarists in rock, literature, and music education. Drawing from Sikivu Hutchinson’s new Black feminist road novel, Rock ‘n’ Roll Heretic: The Life and Times of Rory Tharpe, the discussion will explore Black women rocker’s perspectives on confronting racism/sexism/ageism and homophobia in corporate rock, defying cultural and gender expectations in the Black community, honoring unsung Black rock heroines, and lifting up Gen Z Black girl rock musicians. You Really Should Sit Like A Lady On July 2nd, TheatreFIRST will premiere the virtual production of Lisa Evans’ YOU REALLY SHOULD SIT LIKE A LADY. Directed by Leigh Rondon-Davis, visually designed by Marisa Ramos, and performed by Evans, YOU REALLY SHOULD SIT LIKE A LADY uses music and sound as a mixtape for this solo piece’s framework to explore the hilarious, perplexing, and sometimes infuriating contradictions in the process of gender identity formation.
