‍Join us for our monthly series, The African Diaspora Film Club. Modeled after our African Book Club, we will meet once a month to discuss a film that we have all viewed in advance of the discussion. The conversation will be moderated by Cornelius Moore, co-director of California Newsreel and film series curator at MoAD.

We will be choosing a selection of films previously screened at MoAD. You may have already seen it, or this may be your first introduction. In either case, join us on the second Sunday of the month for a lively discussion of the film. You will receive instructions to register via zoom after you sign up here.

This month we will be discussing a film that resonates with our current climate WHOSE STREETS? (Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis, 2017, 100 minutes). You can view this film in advance on multiple streaming platforms which can be found here. It is also available for free on Kanopy.com with a local library card.

In addition WHOSE STREETS? will be showing on KQED's PBS channel at 5pm on Saturday, July 25th.

‍Told by the activists and leaders who live and breathe this movement for justice, WHOSE STREETS? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising. When unarmed teenager Michael Brown is killed by police and left lying in the street for hours, it marks a breaking point for the residents of St. Louis, Missouri. Grief, long-standing racial tensions and renewed anger bring residents together to hold vigil and protest this latest tragedy.

Empowered parents, artists, and teachers from around the country come together as freedom fighters. As the national guard descends on Ferguson with military grade weaponry, these young community members become the torchbearers of a new resistance. Filmmakers Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis know this story because they have lived the story.

WHOSE STREETS? is a powerful battle cry from a generation fighting, not for their civil rights, but for the right to live.

‍Brittany Ferrell, featured in the film, will join us for the discussion.

Brittany Ferrell is an activist, political organizer, registered nurse, and public health scholar. She is a transformative member of the community in St. Louis, Missouri, where she resides. Brittany works as a political organizer and policy associate with Black Futures Labs where she helps drive initiatives and facilitate programming that builds Black political power across the nation.
