African Book Club
Launched in 2015 by award-winning author Faith Adiele and musician and educator Holly Shogbesan, African Book Club is a free monthly series that celebrates the current renaissance of African literature. The series highlights Africa’s diversity by seeking out female and LGBTQ voices, newer literary genres like Afro-Futurism, Young Adult, and Mystery, and representation from all 50+ countries, including translations from Arabic, French, and Portuguese.
Events calendarAfrican Diaspora Film Club
The African Diaspora Film Club meets virtually every other month to discuss films related to the African diaspora. All films are viewed in advance of the discussion and conversations with filmmakers are moderated by Cornelius Moore, the guest film curator at MoAD. Join us for our next lively conversation! MoAD’s Art As We See It is a monthly virtual series that pairs visual art from top artists of the African diaspora with selected songs from past and present musical innovators. MoAD hosts moderated conversations with celebrated Black artists about their exhibitions at the Museum and about their art practice. Notable artists have included Mickalene Thomas, Lorna Simpson, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, David Huffman, Todd Gray, Firelei Báez, and Sadie Barnette.

MoAD hosts contemporary authors who write about the African Diaspora in a variety of literary genres such as fiction, poetry, essays, memoir, and scholarly writing, among others. Notable authors have included Akwaeke Emezi, NoViolet Bulawayo, Belva Davis, Natalie Baszile, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Isabel Allende, Sonia Sanchez, and Hanif Abdurraqib.

In the Artist’s Studio is a monthly virtual series that visits some of our favorite artists in their studios to see what they’re currently working on. Talks are hosted by MoAD’s Director of Education, Demetri Broxton, and they are followed by an audience Q&A.

MoAD is thrilled to announce that the 2023 African Literary Award finalist is Eloghosa Osunde, author of Vagabonds!. African Book Club discussed Vagabonds! as the book selection for July 2022. Osunde was honored at the virtual Award Ceremony on December 3rd, hosted by African Book Club co-founder Faith Adiele.
