MoAD will celebrate the national observance of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday as a Day of Service, providing FREE admission to the museum and programs throughout the day.
Through film, art, and music, our special guests will help us reflect on the importance of free speech and diverse communities. Marcus Shelby presents MLK and the Blues, and a documentary created by the King Institute at Stanford University will screen in our Freedom Theater. A family art activity and gallery scavenger hunt connects families to our spring exhibition, Black Refractions: Highlights from the Studio Museum in Harlem.Come together to celebrate the life and achievements of one of our nation's greatest heroes.FREE ADMISSION
MLK DAY SCHEDULE
SIDEWALK
11 AM – 1 PM
Prescott Circus performers from Prescott Elementary in West Oakland will dazzle you with their stilt-walking and interactive performance
1 – 2:30 PM
Dimensions Dance Company will present a youth dance performance “The History of Dance From Africa to America,” tracing the evolution of African dance from its traditional roots to its contemporary expressions in the United States. Through dance and music participants are introduced to the original purpose of dance in Africa and how dance and music in America have been influenced by the African Diaspora. The presentation includes the excitement of live drums and highly spirited dances in traditional African, jazz, and hip hop, will take place in front of MoAD on the sidewalk, and will be performed two times with a break in between each performance.
