About

This event has been cancelled. We regret any inconvenience.

Artist, activist and entrepreneur, Nicholle Kobi has deftly and with distinct artistry straddled two very different worlds. Born in Kinshasa, Congo but raised in Normandy, France, Kobi has used art to navigate and challenge the chasm between her African and French identities. Her joyful, upbeat renderings of black women, considered controversial in France, defy stereotypes and radiate success, agency, depth, and well-being.

Join us for a discussion as we discover Kobi's work and explore the representation of Black women in contemporary art.  Moderated by Anyka Barber, owner of Betti Ono Gallery. The discussion will be followed by a reception.

Nicholle Kobi is a Black-French Artist, Entrepreneur, Speaker and Activist, mostly known for Black Women and Black Sisterhood Illustrations along with her fashion illustrations. Her artwork has appeared in Marie Claire, Glamour, Ebony, Essence, BET.com, ABC Studios (Grey’s Anatomy), NubianSkin, Ouidad and many others. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in Paris, Toronto, Montreal, NYC, Atlanta and many cities across the United States.

Born and raised in Oakland, California Anyka Barber is a mother, an artist/activist, curator and entrepreneur. In 2010 Anyka founded Betti Ono, a creative social enterprise and center for arts, culture and community committed to the cultural, social, politics and economic emancipation and development of low-income, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities of color.

The Pop-Up will be open during our regular hours, 11am-6pm on Saturday, December 15. The discussion will be from 3-4pm and the reception will be from 4-5:30pm. Enjoy Black Girl Magic Wine provided by McBride Sisters Wines.

This program is presented in partnership with Maison Noire Américaine, a San Francisco based cultural nonprofit organization designed to educate and inspire people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds about the African American presence, experience and influence in France.
