Teachers and their students are invited to explore the museum with a MoAD Tour Guide. Groups of 10 or more must book a tour in advance and are eligible for a discount.

ABOUT

Thank you for your interest in a MoAD guided tour!

We have designed participatory and engaging art experiences that aim to spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and support your learning objectives. We offer in-person tours that are approximately 50-minutes long. Our tours are customized to meet the unique needs of each group, ensuring a personalized experience. We can accommodate K-12 school and youth groups of up to 35 individuals, including chaperones. We kindly request that school groups bring at least one chaperone with them, and chaperones may be asked to help and/or support to students during the tour.

In-person school group tour prices

  • School groups including chaperones (k-12): $2 per person
  • College students (with valid school id): $6 per person

Tour reservation guidelines

  • A $25 deposit, payable by credit or debit card, is required to schedule a school tour.
  • Tours must be scheduled at least 7 days in advance.
  • Cancellations require 48 hours notice.
  • Deposits paid for a canceled tour will be credited toward a future visit.
  • If a cancellation or reschedule is not made 48 hours in advance, the deposit will be forfeited.

  • The Art and Life of William H. Johnson (1901- 1970)*
    *William H. Johnson was an African American painter who was born in Florence, South Carolina, in 1901. He was passionate about art from a young age. Johnson's paintings, which often depicted scenes of everyday life in African American communities, are celebrated for their vivid colors and distinctive style. He is one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. William H. Johnson passed away in 1970, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and influence artists to this day.

Virtual school group tour prices

  • School groups (k-12): $75 per group per classroom
  • Colleges: $75 per group for up to 30 people

Sample virtual tour agenda

  • Introduction (5-7 minutes)
  • Opening activity (5 minutes)
  • Guided viewing of three or four works (20 minutes)
  • Second activity (3 minutes)
  • Discussion of two or three selected works from the exhibition (15 minutes)
  • Q&A and closing (7-10 minutes)

THINGS TO KNOW

Prepare for Your In-Person Visit

  • Wait for email confirmation before making transportation arrangements.
  • MoAD does not have group lunch facilities.
  • Visit MoAD beforehand to get familiar with the space and art or check out online resources.
  • Payment is required before the tour and tickets are non-refundable.
  • Unused funds will be donated to the museum.

Prepare Chaperones

  • Chaperones are responsible for their students' behavior and safety in the museum
  • They may be asked to help students with interactive materials and activities
  • Chaperones must always stay with their assigned group

The day of your in-person tour

  • Arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled tour
  • The group leader should check in at the front desk
  • The balance must be paid by credit card or check before the start of the tour. The balance is the total due, minus the deposit amount paid upon booking.

Please help students follow these guidelines

  • No food, drinks, or gum in the museum to protect the artwork
  • Non-flash photography is allowed unless noted otherwise
  • Drawing or sketching with a pencil (without eraser) is allowed in galleries
  • Do not touch artwork or exhibition objects unless invited by a guide
  • Keep at least 18 inches away from exhibition pieces when barriers are not visible
  • Speak quietly to maintain a peaceful atmosphere

During your visit, a member of the MoAD security team may remind you of these rules. Your cooperation will help make the museum a safe, welcoming space, and preserve the art for others to enjoy.
